Mathangi "Maya" Arulpragasam (b. 1975) — better known as M.I.A. — is a British rapper with Sri Lankan roots. Though she was born in London to Tamil parents, the family moved back to Sri Lanka when she was six months old. There, her father, Arul Pragasam, was a Tamil militant, cofounding the Eelam Revolutionary Organisation of Students and training with the Palestine Liberation Organization in Lebanon. Maya and her mother returned to London as refugees when she was 11. She started recording music during college, while sharing a flat with Elastica frontwoman Justine Frischmann. You probably know her tracks "Galang," "Bucky Done Gun," and "Paper Planes."
